Dual Strategy of Sodium Reduction and Potassium Enhancement for CV Health6

Public health guidelines traditionally emphasise sodium reduction to manage blood pressure and lower cardiovascular disease risk, yet reducing sodium intake globally remains difficult due to taste preferences and food production complexities. Recent evidence indicates that inadequate potassium intake contributes significantly to hypertension aetiology, prompting a necessary shift from focusing solely on sodium reduction to incorporating increased potassium consumption. Clinical trials show that replacing dietary sodium with potassium salt substitutes lowers blood pressure and adverse outcomes. Combining education, food reformulation, and public policy into a dual sodium and potassium strategy offers a more effective path to advance global cardiovascular health.
