Mitigation of Smartphone-induced Disturbances of Circadian Cycle

Recognising evening exposure to blue light emitted from the screen of smartphones potentially compromises sleep quality by disturbing the circadian cycle and aggravates health issues, a recent study investigated the effects of night mode functions on smartphones and blue-light-reducing lenses on cutting blue light and reducing melatonin suppression. It was found that night mode functions set to the warmest colour temperature produced the greatest decrease in short-wavelength emission from screens, circadian illuminance and melatonin suppression. Besides, blue-light-reducing tinted spectacle lenses showed a modest reduction of melatonin suppression compared to clear lenses. Therefore, wearing such lenses especially at night and activating night mode functions are possible strategies to reset the circadian clock and improve sleep quality and duration. The results can support the development of strategies to lower exposure of short wavelength radiation from electronic display devices.
