A kidney disease, often asymptomatic in early stages, is usually overlooked by the public. In fact, more than one-tenth of the world’s population is living with kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD). Because of the progressive nature and the health burden of the disease, more members of the public should be aware of the risk factors and a healthy lifestyle to prevent CKD, while those at risk can be diagnosed early to avoid the development of kidney failure.

Riding on the World Kidney Day campaign, the Hong Kong Kidney Foundation (HKKF), together with the Hong Kong Society of Nephrology (HKSN) and Hong Kong Association of Renal Nurses, organised the Hong Kong World Kidney Day Carnival on 10th March 2024 in the Zero Carbon Building.

The event was kicked off with Dr. Lui Siu Fai (the Chairman of HKKF), Dr. Wong Sze Ho, Sunny (the Chairman of HKSN), Ms Lam May Ki (the President of HKARN), and Mr. Fan Hung Ling Henry (the Chairman of Hospital Authority) introducing the theme, “Kidney Health for All – Advancing equitable access to care and optimal medication practice”, in a drama performance, followed by group photos and guest speeches. Under Secretary for Health, Dr. Lee Ha Yun, Libby, pointed out that under the Chronic Disease Co-Care Pilot Scheme, adults are encouraged to have their bodies checked regularly to enable early disease intervention, and nephrologists may enhance their collaboration with patients’ family doctors to help patients achieve their treatment goals.

Moreover, the event was enriched with stage performance series, including live band, and a dance show with the "Lazy Lion" creating a vibrant and jubilant ambience, while a few informative talks on CKD management were delivered for public education. Meanwhile, the participants’ enthusiasm for carnival games and children’s activities added vibrancy to the day, and Hong Kong World Kidney Day 2024 culminated on a high note.
